The University of Charleston came-from-behind to advance to championship Sunday of the MEC Baseball Tournament thanks to a 5-2 victory over Concord on Saturday afternoon at GoMart Ballpark.

Charleston improved to 24-29 overall on the year, while Concord finished the year with a record of 26-27 overall. The Golden Eagles pitching staff finished the game without allowing any earned runs to earn the victory.

Jaeden Peterson started on the mound for Charleston, throwing four innings, while only giving up three hits.  The three hits all came in the top of the first inning, when Concord was able to plate their only runs of the game.

JP Shultz (5-1) earned the win, throwing 3.1 innings through the middle innings and only allowing two hits.  Landon Ingram came in to earn his first save of the year throwing 1.2 innings and only two hits.  As a staff, the Golden Eagles strikeout seven batters, while only allowing seven hits.  They induced nine ground outs for the game.

John Stansbury’s double to left field and Andrew Kobryn’s single in the bottom of the second inning helped level the score at 2-2.

The decisive inning came in the fifth inning. In the top of the inning Concord was able to load the bases on three walks with no outs.  JP Shultz was able to force Lucas Cannon into a double play.  Lucas’ hit was directly at Shultz who fired it to home plate for the first out and then to first for the key double-play.  Shultz then struck out Jared Lavergne to end the inning and keep the score tied at 2-2.

In the bottom of the inning, Charleston scored the go-ahead run through Maxwell Layne.  Layne opened the inning with a double to right center and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Andrew Kobryn.  Layne scored one batter later on Collin Kemp’s single to left field to take a 3-2 lead.

The Golden Eagles added to their lead in the bottom of the 7th inning.  Maxwell Layne again led off the inning with a double, then scored on Trent Dosenbach’s sacrifice fly to right.  Collin Kemp, who reached on an error, then scored on Abe Fenwick’s RBI single.

Concord was held to multiple hits in just one inning between the 6th and 9th innings and only two runners in scoring position as the Charleston pitching staff came up with timely outs.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday and take on the Frostburg State University Bobcats for a spot in the 2026 MEC Baseball Championship game.

#3S Glenville State def. #2N Frostburg State, 11-10
By: Bryan Dillon

Glenville State rallied from an eight-run deficit to defeat Frostburg State, 11-10, Saturday evening at GoMark Ballpark to advance to championship Sunday in the MEC Baseball Tournament.

The Pioneers improve to 30-22 on the year, while Frostburg State falls to 36-17 on the year.  With both teams having just a single loss in the tournament, the Tertiary Bracket will be invoked.  That will see Frostburg State play Charleston at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, while Glenville State will play at 4:30 p.m. against the winner.

Early on, the Frostburg lineup continued what it had done in the first two games of the tournament, jumping out to an 8-0 lead through two innings. Frostburg State opened the game with a pair of first-inning runs, then scored six in the second inning, thanks to back-to-back home runs from Jackson Schalick (grand slam) and Jake Holler (solo).

Following the Bobcats' home runs, Glennville State turned to Zach Dellerman.  As he did in Friday night’s game, Dellerman took command on the mound, throwing and slowing down the Frostburg State bats.  Dellerman proceeded to throw five innings, allowing just a single run on three hits and giving the Pioneers the opportunity to mount a comeback.

Glenville State’s big inning to build momentum for the comeback came in the 4th inning when they plated five runs.  The Pioneers loaded the bases with three straight walks from Jacob Meadows, Adam Bright, and Zach Laurie. Meadows scored the first run when Ashton Crace was hit by a pitch.  Bright then scored on an RBI single by Gavin Blair. After a third run scored on a sacrifice fly from Luke Sweigart, Colby Guy doubled to right center to drive in two more runs and close the deficit to 8-5.

Frostburg State added a run in the top of the fifth inning, but the Pioneers were able to keep their offense going in the bottom of the inning.  Meadows again reached on an infield single and was later driven in by Bright.  Greyson McNeill drove in the second run of the inning when he sent a single back up the middle to drive in Crace.

After the Pioneers turned to William Chu in the 6th, Frostburg State threatened to add to its lead with runners reaching second and third base.  Chu was able to induce an inning-ending ground ball off the bat of Tanner Cunningham to end the threat. Chu (2-2) earned the win on the mound.

GSU grabbed its first lead of the game in the bottom of the 7th inning.  Laurie, Crace, and Blair reached to load the bases with no outs, leading to McNeill’s second RBI of the game when he singled to left field, which scored two runs when an error allowed Crace to score. After a pitching change and two outs, Meadows drove in a pair of runs to give the Pioneers an 11-9 lead heading into the 8th inning.

Starting the 8th with the heart of its order, Frostburg State once again was able to get multiple runners in scoring position, but was only able to score one run in the inning. The run came after Manny Hall scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Ryan Bouma.  With runners on second and third and two outs, Grant Landis, who entered earlier in the inning, was about to strike out Zane Bohn to end the inning and keep an 11-10 lead for Glenville State.

Landis earned his first save of the season when he was able to get Hall to ground out to end the ball game and send Glenville State through to championship Sunday.
