Schalick, Varela-Payne Earn MEC Baseball Weekly Honors

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – The Mountain East Conference has announced the winners of this week’s MEC Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week awards. The MEC Player of the Week awards are presented by The Health Plan.
 
Frostburg State’s Jackson Schalick has been named the MEC Baseball Player of the Week while Concord’s Kaden Varela-Payne has been named the MEC Pitcher of the Week.
 
Schalick, a junior from Elmer, New Jersey, led Frostburg to a 5-0 week, batting .533 with three doubles and six RBI. He recorded a hit in every game, going 2-for-3 against Pitt-Johnstown with three runs scored and an RBI. In game three against West Liberty, he went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, and an RBI. 
 
Varela-Payne, a sophomore from Raleigh, North Carolina, tossed his first career complete-game shutout as he blanked Davis & Elkins in the series opener in a 7-0 Concord win. Varela-Payne struck out eight batters and scattered four hits over seven innings. The Raleigh, North Carolina native became the first Concord pitcher to throw a complete-game shutout in three years as he helped Concord sweep D&E.
