2026 MEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships Recap | Day 1

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After Day 1 of the Mountain East Conference Track & Field Championships, the University of Charleston holds the lead in the men’s and women’s standings.
 
Following Sunday’s six finals – three in the men’s and three in the women’s – UC holds the edge over the field in the three-day event at the Track & Field Complex at Mylan Park. The Golden Eagles’ men have 34 points followed by Wheeling’s 18, and Davis & Elkins’ 13. On the women’s side, UC has 33 points followed by Glenville State with 27, and Point Park with 22 points.
 
In Sunday’s action, UC’s Jullian Matthews took home the title in the Men’s Hammer Throw. Matthews’s teammate Luke MessInger took 3rd in the event while GSU’s Will Jackson placed 2nd. At the Outdoor event, the top three in any finals event earn MEC all-conference honors based on performance, with the order of finish determine first team, second team, and honorable mention.
 
In the Women’s Hammer throw, UC’s Mia Huber won the event while Huber’s teammate Ella Nilsson placed 3rd and Janae Scott of GSU took 2nd overall.
 
In the Men’s Javelin Throw, Wheeling’s Felix Manyani won the event with a new meet record throw of 60.63 meters while fellow Cardinal Erick Berron placed 2nd overall. Point Park’s Ben Williams finished in 3rd place. In the Women’s Javelin, UC’s Tesscani Moore won the event with a throw of 40.84 meters, while Cassidy Hammonds from Concord placed 2nd, and Point Park’s Lina Single took 3rd overall.
 
Sunday night was capped by the finals in the 10,000-meter race. Jordan Thomas of Davis & Elkins won the men’s race with a time of 31:40.62, while Thomas Crockett of Charleston placed 2nd, and West Virginia Wesleyan’s Erik Nygaard placed 3rd overall. While in the Women’s 10,000 meter race, Glenville State Natalie Barr won it with a time of 37:09.05, while Davis & Elkins’ Rebecca Tellez placed 2nd, and Cassondra O’Connor took 3rd place.
 
Day 2 of the MEC Outdoor Track & Field Championship gets underway Monday at 11 a.m. The Decathlon and Heptathlon will both resume. Followed by the Men’s Shot Put finals at 12 p.m. and the Women’s Shot Put finals at 2 p.m. For a full list of Day 2 events can be found at Championship Central. The night will conclude with the Men’s 3K Steeplechase at 8 p.m., and the Women’s 3K Steeplechase at 8:30 p.m.
