Meyer, Varela-Payne Earn MEC Baseball Honors

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – The Mountain East Conference has announced the winners of this week’s MEC Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week awards. The MEC Player of the Week awards are presented by The Health Plan.

Wheeling’s Luke Meyer has been named the MEC Baseball Player of the Week while fellow Mountain Lion Kaden Varela-Payne has been named the MEC Pitcher of the Week.

Meyers, a red-shirt freshman from Trophy Club, Texas, was a catalyst for a Cardinal offense that put up 46 runs across their three-game series sweep of Carolina University. Meyer would finish 8-12 (.667) with 2 home runs, a double, a triple, 5 runs scored and 6 RBIs across the three-game set. He saved his best performance for the final day of the series, finishing 4-5 with a double, a home run, 3 RBIs, and 2 runs scored. Meyer had multiple hits in each of the three games and had a power stroke in the middle of the Cardinal lineup.

Varela-Payne, a sophomore from Raleigh, North Carolina, tossed his first career complete game as he struck out a career-high 9 batters and only allowed 3 hits and one earned run in a 9-1 victory over Kutztown. Varela-Payne needed 92 pitches to sail through the KU lineup over seven innings. After giving up a run in the second inning, the Raleigh, North Carolina native finished the game by retiring 14 of the final 15 batters he faced. This is Kaden’s third time winning Pitcher of the Week honors.
