Three-peat: Canapp Leads MEC Men's Swimming Awards Again

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – Frostburg State’s Nate Canapp made it a three-peat when the 2024-25 Mountain East Conference Men’s Swimming & Diving awards were released Thursday morning.

Canapp, a senior from Baltimore, Maryland, was again named the MEC Swimmer of the Year — the third time the record-breaker has captured the honor. After the 2021-22 season, Canapp was named MEC Freshman of the Year.

This year, that honor went to Davis & Elkins’ Lasse Schrieken, the MEC Freshman of the Year per a vote of the league’s coaches. Frostburg State’s Kyle Garase was named the MEC Coach of the Year.

Canapp earned All-MEC first team recognition in all five events in which he competed at the Great Midwest Athletic Conference/Mountain East Conference Swimming & Diving Championships in February. He finished first in the 1000 Freestyle, 400 Individual Medley, 500 Free, 1650 Freestyle, and 800 Freestyle Relay.

Schrieken, who is from the Netherlands, earned All-MEC recognition in four events: 200 IM (1st), 400 IM (2nd, behind Canapp), 100 Breaststroke (1st), and 200 Breaststroke (1st). He also earned MEC Swimmer of the Week once during his first collegiate season.

Garase led Frostburg State to the most points by a league men’s program at the G-MAC/MEC Championships, the third consecutive year the Bobcats have pulled off that feat. Frostburg State out-paced Fairmont State, Wheeling, Davis & Elkins, Salem, and West Virginia Wesleyan in the event.
