BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – The Mountain East Conference has announced the winners of this week’s MEC Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week awards. The MEC Player of the Week awards are presented by The Health Plan.
Concord’s Matt DiSanti and Frostburg State’s Jackson Schalick shared the MEC Player of the Week award with Frostburg State’s Patrick Bauer claiming MEC Pitcher of the Week honors.
A sophomore infielder from Wilmington, N.C., DiSanti batted .526 (10-for-19) last week as the Mountain Lions went 3-2 on the diamond. DiSanti had multi-hit games in four of his five outings, including a pair of 3-hit games. He started the week with a home run and three RBIs in a 13-8 win over UVa-Wise, went 4-for-7 in a doubleheader at Point Park and closed things out with three doubles in a 6-0 win at Salem.
Schalick, a sophomore outfielder from Elmer, N.J., led the Bobcats to a 3-1 record in their home opening weekend as they swept Charleston and split a twinbill with West Virginia State. Schalick went 4-for-4 in Saturday’s second game against UC, highlighted by a two-run go-ahead triple in the fifth, scoring three runs and driving in three more in the two games. Against West Virginia State on Sunday, Schalick was 2-for-3 at the plate with four bases-on-balls, scoring twice and driving in three more runs.
A senior pitcher from Catonsville, Md., Bauer finished off Frostburg’s 3-1 weekend with a flourish by firing a complete-game 2-hitter in a 7-1 win against West Virginia State. Bauer carried a perfect game into the fifth before surrendering his only two hits and retired the side in order over the final two frames to complete his gem. The rangy righty struck out 11 and didn’t walk a batter in improving to 4-1 on the young season.
