Point Park Sweeps MEC Baseball Weekly Awards

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – Point Park University made a clean sweep of this week’s Mountain East Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week awards for baseball. The MEC Player of the Week awards are presented by The Health Plan.

Pioneer veteran Jared Campbell is the MEC Baseball Player of the Week while Point Park teammate Ramon Rodriguez earned MEC Pitcher of the Week honors.

A senior outfielder from Sunrise, Fla, became Point Park’s career home run leader after leading the Pioneers to a pair of season-opening wins in Cary, N.C. Campbell went 4-for-5 with two home runs, a double and a single to drive in nine runs in two games on Sunday as Point Park pummeled Bluefield State, 14-2, and WVU Tech, 9-0. He also scored five runs and added a stolen base. His two home runs on Sunday give him 44 for his career, breaking the 25-year-old record of 42 circuit blasts held by Pioneer Hall of Famer Mike Smith.

Rodriguez, a junior lefthander from Cayey, P.R., was almost untouchable in the 9-0 shutout of WVU Tech on Sunday. He needed only 64 pitches to blank the Golden Bears on one hit – an infield single in the top of the third innings – through the first six frames, striking out seven and not issuing a walk to get the win.
