2025 MEC Track & Field Championships: Day 1 Recap

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — After Sunday’s first day of the Mountain East Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, the University of Charleston is atop both the men’s and women’s leaderboards. The final day of the two-day event, held inside the Chris Cline Athletic Complex on the campus of Marshall University, concludes Monday.

UC leads both championships after six of 17 events. On the men’s side, the Golden Eagles are followed by Davis & Elkins, Frostburg State, Point Park, and Glenville State in the top five. Charleston leads the West Virginia Wesleyan women, followed by Point Park, Glenville State, and West Liberty.

Wheeling’s Keala McCurry became a four-time champion at the MEC’s Indoor Track & Field Championships, taking first place in the pole vault with a meet record 3.60 meters. West Liberty’s Ky’Ara Ross also set a meet record with her title in the long jump, and Davis & Elkins’ distance medley relay team set a meet record in that event.

Other Day 1 winners included Glenville State’s Janae Scott, who won the Shot Put, and West Virginia Wesleyan’s Leigha Hall, who won the 5,000-meter run.

On the men’s side, one individual and one relay team set meet records. First, Point Park’s Akeem Mustapha set a meet record in the long jump with a distance of 7.39 meters. Later Sunday evening, the University of Charleston’s distance medley relay team also set a meet record.

Other Day 1 champions on the men’s side included Frostburg State’s Thomas McCoy (pole vault), West Liberty’s Issac Tavo (shot put), and UC’s Cosmas Chelanga (5,000-meter run).

The final day of action gets underway Monday morning.
