HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The annual Mountain East Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship begins Sunday at the Chris Cline Athletic Facility Complex.
The two-day meet gets underway at noon. The meet will conclude late Monday night, followed by an awards ceremony. The MEC Track & Field Championship will be streamed here, with multi-time National Sports Media Association Sportscaster of the Year Mark Martin behind the mic for the event.
The teams competing in this year’s event: Concord, Davis & Elkins, Frostburg State, Glenville State, Point Park, University of Charleston, West Liberty, West Virginia State, West Virginia Wesleyan, and Wheeling. So far, 21 MEC men’s track & field competitors have posted NCAA Provisional Qualifying times, while 10 women’s competitors have qualified for the NCAAs.
Among those, West Liberty’s Hunter Patterson, Wesleyan’s Taiwo Babawale-Thropp, West Virginia State’s Caedon Trotter, and UC’s Samuel Idiens have qualified in multiple NCAA events. On the women’s side, Wesleyan’s Samantha Cash has qualified in the Triple Jump and Pentathlon.
In last year’s meet, also held at the Chris Cline Athletic Complex, the University of Charleston swept the men’s and women’s championship.
The UC men won for the conference championship for the third time in four years. Charleston scored 169 points to top the leaderboard, followed by Frostburg State (107), West Liberty (97.50), Davis & Elkins (79), and Wheeling (62.50).
In addition to crowning team champions, the MEC also announced its postseason awards. For the women, Charleston’s Beth Sykes was named the league’s Track Athlete of the Year, while West Virginia Wesleyan’s Samantha Cash repeated as the Feld Athlete of the Year. West Virginia State’s Candace Morris was recognized as the Freshman of the Year.
The men’s award winners included Wheeling’s Moses Koroma as the Track Athlete of the Year, Charleston’s Kellen Tropeck as the Field Athlete of the Year, and Charleston’s Sam Idiens as the Freshman of the Year.
Charleston head coach Nick Bias swept the men’s and women’s coach of the year awards in 2024.
