BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – The Mountain East Conference has announced the winners of this week’s MEC Male and Female Track Athlete of the Week awards. The MEC Player of the Week awards are presented by The Health Plan.
The University of Charleston’s Sam Idiens was named MEC Male Indoor Track Athlete of the Week while Point Park’s Dunya Van den Tooren claimed MEC Female Indoor Track Athlete of the Week laurels.
Van den Tooren, a freshman from The Netherlands, hit an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the high jump while competing in the Sykes and Sabock Invitational at Penn State University on Saturday. Van den Tooren’s leap of 5 feet, 6 inches (1.68 meters) was not only a NCAA provisional qualifying mark, it was the second-highest in school history.
Idiens, a sophomore from Christchurch, N.Z., came up big while competing at the Doc Hale Virginia Tech Invitational on Friday. The speedy New Zealander turned in a blistering NCAA qualifying time while finishing fourth in a highly-competitive 800-meter race. His time of 1:48.29 is the fastest 800-meter run by an NCAA Division II athlete this season and the best ever in the MEC.
