CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The University of Charleston erased a 4-0 deficit with 17 unanswered runs to roll to its third-consecutive Mountain East Conference Baseball Championship on Sunday afternoon with a 17-4 victory over West Virginia State at GoMart Ballpark.
The 2024 MEC Baseball Championship was presented by YES! Chevrolet and YES! Ford.
West Virginia State got home runs from Chris Morris and Kyle Waters in the first and second innings, opening up an early 4-0 lead over the Golden Eagles on Sunday afternoon.
However, Eric Chartier hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the second, and UC plated seven runs in the third to take control of the game with a 10-4 advantage after three innings.
Charleston’s third inning was headlined by a three-run home run by Drew Klaserner, who was later named the 2024 MEC Tournament MVP.
Charleston finished with 14 hits in the game, including seven extra-base hits. In addition to home runs by Klaserner and Chartier, five different Golden Eagles hit doubles, including Klaserner, JD Armstrong, Casey Finck, Carter Rust and Damian Witty.
The Golden Eagles also had four stolen bases on the afternoon.
Trace Hartman improved to 6-0 on the season for the Golden Eagles, finishing the afternoon with five strikeouts.
