Day 2 Recap: 2022 MEC Baseball Championship

BECKLEY, W.Va. – Glenville State, Charleston and Concord earned victories on day two of the MEC Baseball Championship, which is being played at Epling Stadium in Beckley.
 
Following Friday’s slate of games, Notre Dame College and Fairmont State have been eliminated from tournament play. Saturday’s schedule features the winner’s bracket final between Charleston and Concord at 12 noon, followed by Glenville State and Frostburg State in an elimination game at 3:30 p.m. The loser’s bracket final is set for Saturday evening at 7 p.m.
 
Game 4: Glenville State 9, Notre Dame 5 | Box Score
 
After falling behind by a 4-2 deficit, Glenville State scored two runs in the fifth inning and added five in the sixth inning to take control in an eventual 9-5 Pioneer win to open day two of the MEC Baseball Championships at Linda K. Epling Stadium in Beckley.
 
After the Pioneers struck first with two runs in the bottom of the third, Notre Dame took the lead in the fourth with four runs in the inning. The first NDC run came when Nick Farrell was walked with the bases loaded. After a Glenville State pitching change, Ben Ross, the 2022 MEC Player of the Year, hit a three-run double to center field that cleared the bases and gave the Falcons the advantage at 4-2.
 
In the fifth with two runners on for the Pioneers, Glenville’s Trevor Smith singled through the right side and drove in a pair of runs from second and third to tie the game at 4-4.
 
An inning later, the Pioneers took complete control of the game with a five-run frame. Chase Swain scored the first run of the inning by driving in Mathew Mangum on an RBI single to center field. The next GSC runner crossed home plate on a walk with the bases loaded, before Colby Werry reached home on a wild pitch – making the GSU advantage 7-4.
 
Still in the bottom of the sixth, Glenville’s Calen Kampes stepped to the plate and blasted an RBI single to center field that brought home Zach Morris and Mitch Lohr.
 
Notre Dame’s Alec Mendoza hit an RBI single in the eighth to make the final score 9-5.
 
Four hitters recorded a pair of hits for the Pioneers, including Werry, Lohr, Morris and Smith. Smith drove in a team-high three runs for GSU. Ross led Notre Dame by hitting 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Mendoza also recorded three hits and drove in a run for the Falcons.
 
Austin Corn improved to 6-3 on the season after pitching the final five and a third for the Pioneers. Jesse Clark was responsible for the NDC loss after pitching the sixth inning.
 
Game 5: Charleston 9, Fairmont State 3 | Box Score
 
Charleston opened a 7-0 lead by scattering seven runs over the first six innings of the game and never looked back in an 9-3 win over Fairmont State on day two of the MEC Baseball Championships in Beckley.
 
The Golden Eagles piled up 13 hits during the victory, including a 3-for-5 performance from Pete Costigan. Costigan had two doubles and scored three runs for UC in the win. Drew Klaserner also had a big performance at the plate going 2-for-3 with a double and two runs batted-in. Andre Martinez also recorded a pair of hits, including a double, and drove in a pair of runs.
 
Eight different Golden Eagles drove in runs and Charleston had five doubles during the victory.
 
Ethan Soderna pitched seven scoreless innings for UC, allowing eight hits and striking out seven FSU batters. He improves to 9-1 on the season with the victory.
 
Fairmont State’s offense racked up nine hits on the afternoon but stranded 11 runners on base. Noah Canterbury led Fairmont State at the plate by going 3-for-4 while recording the Falcons only RBI.
 
Game 6: Concord 10, Frostburg State 4 | Box Score
 
Concord used a seven-run third inning to power past Frostburg State, 10-4, during Friday’s nightcap at the 2022 MEC Baseball Tournament in Beckley.
 
At the plate, Concord recorded 14 hits, including five extra-base hits, in the win. Anthony Stehlin put together a 4-for-4 performance with two doubles, a home run and three runs scored to lead the Mountain Lions. Joey Duffer also went 3-for-5 with an RBI, while MJ Hunter and Zack Saryeldin each recorded a pair of hits.
 
The Mountain Lions have tallied 30 hits over their first two tournament games in Beckley.

Eddie Blake (7-4) went seven innings as he allowed four earned runs and struck out six. Fifth-year senior relief pitcher Dan Nicholls tossed two scoreless innings to secure the win.
