BECKLEY, W.Va. -- Shepherd pounded out 22 hits and scored 19 runs to win the 2016 Mountain East Confernce Baseball Title, 19-2, over West Virginia State on Saturday at Epling Stadium.
The Rams (37-13) earn the MEC's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. The full field will be announced tonight at 10 p.m. on NCAA.com.
Mike Brown went 4-for-6 with six RBI and three runs scored in the victory for the Rams. Christian Hamel also had four hits, and Zane Bard drove in four. Daniel Heleine had three hits and scored twice, and Ron Farley had two hits and scored three times.
Jamie Driver (7-4) picked up his second win of the tournament by giving up just one run on six hits in seven innings of work. Colin Benner and Austin Guy finished off the game for the Rams.
Driver, Heleine and Porter were named to the MEC All-Tournament team. Jacob Carney hit a tournament-best .611 (11-for-18) and was named MVP. He was 2-for-4 with an RBI in the win over WVSU on Sunday.
Trayvis Patterson went 2-for-3 with both of West Virginia State's RBI. Justin Graham also had a pair of hits for the Yellow Jackets.
Dustin Kincaid (7-2), WVSU's starter on Thursday, took the loss giving up six runs on nine hits in 2.2 innings of work.
