BECKLEY, W.Va. -- Notre Dame forced a game two, but West Virginia State won the second game to take the MEC Tournament title on Sunday afternoon at Linda K. Epling Stadium.
The Yellow Jackets came into Sunday's game needing just one win, while Notre Dame needed to claim to victories to take the tournament title. NDC managed to force a second game after a 7-3 win game one, but WVSU bounced back to win the second game 4-1.
WVSU head coach Cal Bailey added another conference tournament title to his illustrious career as he heads to retirement at the conclusion of the season.
Notre Dame came out of the gates swinging in game one scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Danny Beaver and Troy Findlay each had two-run hits in the inning to spark the Falcons. That was more than enough for starter Matt Kastelic who shook off a rough start to the tournament picking up a save on Saturday night and getting the start today allowing only one hit in five innings of action. Simon Davis and Jake Welch contributed in relief to ensure the victory for NDC.
In game two, it was WVSU that got off to the early lead as Cody Smith hit a solo home run in the first. The Yellow Jackets manufactured a run in the fifth on a Josh Kiser fly ball, and then Jack Hudson hit a two-run double in the sixth to push their lead to 4-0.
NDC was able to get one back in the eighth off of closer Joshua Falbo, but Falbo was able to get three outs in the ninth to give the Yellow Jackets the win.
