BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – The University of Charleston and Glenville State softball teams both advance in the NCAA DII Softball Atlantic Regional with wins on Friday. Charleston defeated Shippensburg while Glenville State defeated Claflin and then Shippensburg as they will meet again. Fairmont State defeated West Chester but then fell to East Stroudsburg as their season comes to an end.
No. 5 Charleston def. No. 1 Shippensburg, 2-1
SHIPPENBURG, Pa. – The University of Charleston softball team picked up a 2-1 win over No. 1 seed Shippensburg on Friday afternoon in the NCAA DII Softball Atlantic Regional.
The Golden Eagles managed four hits in the contest while Shippensburg tallied six hits.
UC got going early in the first inning as they scored two runs as they led 2-0.
Shippensburg scored in the bottom of the second to pull within one, 2-1, off one hit.
UC then held Shippensburg scoreless in last five innings as they held on to win, 2-1.
Emma Smith went 1-for-2 with an RBI while Kayla Moran had the other RBI for the Golden Eagles. Addison Mass pitched the complete game allowing one earned run on six hits, while striking out two batters.
Shippensburg’s Rilee Ehrlacher went 2-for-3. Emilee Sullivan went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Dani Hayward pitched six innings allowing two runs on four hits with three strike outs.
Charleston will now play Glenville State on Saturday, May 16
th at 11 a.m. UC comes into the matchup with no losses and will advance with a win. GSU must beat UC twice to advance.
No. 7 Fairmont State def. No. 6 West Chester, 1-0 – Elimination Game
No. 2 East Stroudsburg def. No. 7 Fairmont State, 6-0 – Elimination Game
STROUDSBURG, Pa. – Fairmont State’s Breonna Marietta would hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning scoring Abbie Keilholz as the Falcons defeated No. 6 West Chester on Friday in the NCAA DII Softball Atlantic Regional elimination game, 1-0.
The first seven innings saw both teams locked in a defensive struggle, with neither side able to score.
In the bottom of the eighth, Fairmont State broke the deadlock. Abbie Keilhoz led off with a double to right center. Bella Hess executed a sacrifice bunt, advancing Keilhoz to third. Allyson Nordling, pinch hitting, singled to shortstop, putting runners on the corners. Emma Paul drew a walk, loading the bases. Breonna Marietta then delivered the decisive hit, a single through the right side, allowing Keilhoz to score.
Delaney Haller pitched a complete game over eight innings without allowing a run. Haller limited the Golden Rams to just four hits and recorded three strikeouts.
Abbie Keilhoz contributed offensively by scoring one run and adding two hits, including a double. Emma Paul added with two hits and one walk. Breonna Marietta delivered the walk-off hit for the Falcons in the eighth.
In the second elimination game of the day, Fairmont State fell to the No. 2 seed East Stroudsburg 6-0 as their season comes to an end.
East Stroudsburg struck first in the fourth inning scoring four runs on four hits as they held a 4-0 lead. ESU then added another two runs in the fifth as they now led, 6-0.
Fairmont State tried to make a comeback but couldn’t muster up any hits in the sixth and then went three-up-and-three-down in the seventh as they fell, 6-0.
Fairmont State had just one hit and committed two errors while East Stroudsburg finished with 11 hits and committed one error.
For the Falcons, Avery Townsend went 1-for-2 and had the only hit for Fairmont State. Delany Haller pitched 3.2 innings while allowing five hits and three earned runs.
Karlye Teman went 2-for-2 with an RBI while Brennan Corr and Gigi DeMito each recorded an RBI. Sarah Davenport pitched 4.2 innings allowing one hit and struck out seven batters.
No. 4 Glenville State def. No. 8 Claflin, 13-0 – Elimination Game
No. 4 Glenville State def. No. 1 Shippensburg, 6-1 – Elimination Game
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Glenville State tallied 12 hits and scored 13 runs as they kept their season alive defeating No. 8 seed Claflin, 8-0 in the NCAA DII Softball Atlantic Regional.
Glenville State scored 11 runs in the second and third innings coming off nine hits as they never looked back and cruised to the win. GSU added another two runs in the fourth.
Claflin had just two hits and an error in the contest.
Delany Warnick continued her outstanding play as she went 3-for-3 with four RBIs. Shelby McDaniels and Lillian Burns each had two RBIs in the victory. Maci Boggess pitched five innings allowing just two hits while striking out five batters.
In the second game, GSU, defeated the No. 1 seed in Shippensburg, 6-1 as they kept their season alive. GSU tallied eight hits in the contest while Shippensburg finished with four hits.
The Pioneers scored four runs in the bottom of the first off four hits as they took a 4-0 lead.
The Raiders scored a run in the second as they cut the deficit to three, trailing 4-1.
Both teams would go scoreless in the third, fourth, and fifth innings.
Glenville State added two more runs in the sixth inning as AndiJo Howard singled to left center scoring Kylee Goodma and Macie Duvall.
Shippensburg then went three-and-out in the seventh as Glenville State took the elimination game, 6-1.
Zailees Seda went 1-for-3 with three RBIs for GSU while AndiJo Howard went 1-for-1 with two RBIs. Meghan Stump went the complete game on the mound allowing four hits, one earned run, and had one strike out.
Brie Wilmot had the only RBI for the Raiders. Dani Howard pitched 5.2 innings in relief allowing four hits, two earned runs and three strike outs.
Glenville State will now play the University of Charleston on Saturday, May 16
