BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. - The Mountain East Conference announced Monday the winners of this week’s Swimmer of the Week awards. The weekly awards are presented by The Health Plan.
Wheeling’s Segmen Duygun has claimed the MEC Men’s Swimmer of the Week while fellow Cardinal Gabby Baiano has been named the MEC Women’s Swimmer of the Week.
Duygun, a freshman from Ankara Turkey, was the Cardinal's top point scorer in their sweep of Bethany and Fairmont State that helped the Cardinals set the single-season dual meet win record. Duygun would put up 509.5 points, while picking up two individual first place finishes for the team. He would kick the night off in the 500 Freestyle, where he beat out the rest of the field by nearly 18 seconds with a time of 5:01.44. He would come back with a PR in the 200 Butterfly, where he swam a time of 2:01.48, breaking his previous mark by just over a second.
Baiano, a senior from Bridgeville, Pennsylvania, led the Cardinals in the pool as Wheeling swept Bethany and Fairmont State. In her senior day performance, Baiano would pick up a pair of wins, including a season-best effort. She started things out in the 500 Freestyle, where she swam a time of 5:22.28 to take the top spot by just over seven seconds. She would come back in the short distance events, taking on the 100 Yard Butterfly. She would take the top spot with a season-best time of 1:03.49 to round out her individual wins. She added a 6th place finish in the 100-Yard Freestyle with a time of 57.70 to round out her day.
