BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — The Mountain East Conference announced Monday the winners of this week’s Football Player of the Week awards. The MEC Player of the Week awards are presented by The Health Plan.
Frostburg State running back Owen Doyle and Wheeling quarterback Ade Olanegan share the MEC Offensive Player of the Week honors. On the other side of the ball, Wheeling’s Leonard Sherrod III is the MEC Defensive Player of the Week. A teammate of Olanegan and Sherrod III, Dayveon Bates, is the MEC Special Teams Player of the Week.
Doyle carried the ball 19 times for 125 yards and two touchdowns in the Bobcats’ comeback win against West Liberty. Doyle rushed six times on Frostburg State’s go-ahead scoring drive totaling 63 yards, including a 43-yarder on third and 1.
Olanegan was a big part of the Cardinals’ comeback win against Fairmont State. He completed 14 of 24 passes for 159 yards and a career-best three touchdowns, including two scoring passes in the third quarter. He also rushed four times for 44 yards.
Sherrod helped Wheeling open MEC play with a win by recording eight tackles and playing a part in all three turnovers caused by the Cardinals’ defense. Sherrod had two interceptions and recovered a fumble as Wheeling scored 28 second-half points on the road.
Bates made an impact on special teams, blocking a Fairmont State punt in the twilight of the third quarter and the game tied at 21-21. Bates’ teammate, Nathan Coleman, picked up the blocked punt and returned it 23 yards to the 6-yard line, setting up a short drive that gave Wheeling a one-score lead.
