BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — Frostburg State travels to California (Pa.) this Saturday for a second round matchup in the NCAA Division II Football Championship bracket.
Both teams advanced after defeating seeded teams from the CIAA: Frostburg State defeated No. 2 seed Johnson C. Smith, 21-17, while Cal beat No. 3 Virginia Union, 27-24.
Saturday’s matchup is set for noon at Adamson Stadium in California, Pennsylvania. The Bobcats and Vulcans met once this season: a 31-26 win by California (Pa.) at home.
Frostburg State (10-2) is ranked No. 19 nationally in scoring defense (18.3 points per game), No. 19 in total defense (298.5 yards per game), and No. 2 in pass efficiency defense.
The Bobcats, who are on a three-game winning streak, are led offensively by the backfield duo of Owen Doyle and KJ Smothers. Doyle, a junior from Denton, Maryland, passed the 1,000-yard threshold last week and has 12 rushing touchdowns. Smothers, a sophomore from Queen Anne, Maryland, has 850 rushing yards and nine touchdowns this season, including a 115-yard, three-touchdown performance in the postseason win against Johnson C. Smith.
Defensively, Rainer Haveland and Kurt Thomas are tied for the team lead in tackles. Wylan Harich, Marquise Allsup, and Tristin Forby each have three interceptions for the Bobcats’ stingy and opportunistic defense.
Cal is 9-2 on the season, and holds a 9-5 all-time mark at home in the playoffs. The Vulcans have scored eight non-offensive touchdowns this season: four on special teams, three via interception returns, and one fumble return. Cal has four wins against nationally ranked opponents this season.
Super Region One is the only NCAA DII region that had three unseeded teams advance.
