University of Charleston Sweeps MEC Men's Soccer Weekly Awards

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — The Mountain East Conference announced Monday the winners of this week’s Men’s Soccer Player of the Week awards. The MEC Player of the Week awards are presented by The Health Plan.

The University of Charleston, ranked No. 2 nationally in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll, swept the MEC weekly honors. Sam Newell is the MEC Offensive Player of the Week, while Joao Silva is the MEC Defensive Player of the Week.

UC recorded a pair of 4-0 wins last week, beating Frostburg State and West Virginia Wesleyan at home. Newell scored a goal and recorded three assists across the two matches, scoring against Frostburg State. Silva also scored against Frostburg State, and then draw a foul in the box against West Virginia Wesleyan to help the Golden Eagles to their opening goal.

Charleston is unbeaten in 15 matches this season, have won five consecutive games, and have not allowed a goal in four straight matches.
