BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — The Mountain East Conference announced Monday the winners of this week’s Men’s Soccer Player of the Week awards. The MEC Player of the Week awards are presented by The Health Plan.
West Liberty’s Alex Watt is the MEC Offensive Player of the Week, while University of Charleston’s Sam Newell is the MEC Defensive Player of the Week.
Watt, a senior from Northern Ireland, scored the only goal in the Hilltoppers’ 1-0 win against No. 10 Concord. Watt was in position to score on a rebound after Zachary Jordan’s attempt was saved, which gave West Liberty the lead in the 33rd minute. The win was the WLU program’s second against nationally ranked competition.
Newell helped lead UC in wins against Concord and Point Park, the latter of which was a clean sheet for the Golden Eagles. Newell had a spectacular goal from 35 yards out in the 34th minute to open scoring against the No. 10 Mountain Lions. The senior from United Kingdom played 148 minutes across the two matches.
