MEC Announces 2024 Acrobatics & Tumbling Awards

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – Prior to the 2024 Mountain East Conference Acrobatics & Tumbling Championships on Friday and Saturday at Fairmont State University, the MEC today announced its postseason award winners and all-conference teams. Fairmont State senior Katey Koehl was voted as the 2024 Athlete of the Year to headline this year’s honorees.

Frostburg State senior base Navah Marierose was recognized as the MEC Specialist of the Year as a standout in the pyramid event, while Fairmont State’s Alexis Wilkinson was voted the league’s Freshman of the Year. Notre Dame head coach Nikki Pizzi is the 2024 MEC Coach of the Year.
 
Koehl, a senior top, base and tumbler from Hartville, Ohio, helped Fairmont State average a 9.60 or higher in four heats this season, including a 9.78 in the open tumbling pass, a 9.75 in the compulsory toss, a 9.72 in the compulsory pyramid, and a 9.61 in the open toss. In all, Koehl helped Fairmont State to 30 scores of 9.50 or higher on the season. This season, Koehl was recognized once as NCATA Athlete of the Week, while earning MEC Athlete of the Week accolades twice. Koehl is now a two-time first team All-MEC honoree, as well as a 2023 NCATA All-American.
 
Marierose, a senior base and tumbler from Gambrills, Md., was a standout in the pyramid event for Frostburg State this season. In the event, she helped the Bobcats average a 9.67 in the inversion heat, a 9.69 in the synchronized heat, and a 9.73 in the open heat. As a mid-level and base in the event, Marierose and the Bobcats recorded a 9.75 or higher 14 times. She was also voted to the All-MEC first team.
 
Wilkinson, a base from Bridgeport, West Virginia, competed in six heats and team event for the Falcons as a freshman. She helped the Falcons average a 9.70 or higher in two different heats, including a 9.79 in open pyramid and a 9.76 in compulsory toss. She also competed in six-element acro, synchronized pyramid and two toss heats. Overall, Wilkinson helped Fairmont State record 17 scores of 9.50 or higher this season. Wilkinson was voted NCATA Freshman of the Week on April 3.
 
Notre Dame College second-year head coach Nikki Pizzi was voted the league’s Coach of the Year for the first time. Pizzi led the second-year Falcons to a three-win improvement and a .500 record in 2024. The Falcons improved their meet score by nearly 12 points from early-February to late-March, and also cracked the 250.000 mark for the first time in program history on March 21. Pizzi also helped mentor and develop two All-MEC honorees in 2024.
