BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. - Wheeling’s Gabby Baiano headlined the 2023-24 Mountain East Conference Women’s Swimming Awards as the league’s Swimmer of the Year, the league announced on Wednesday afternoon.
Wheeling’s Grace Moorley was also honored as the league’s Freshman of the Year. In addition, Frostburg State head coach Matt Brinton was also recognized as the league’s Coach of the Year for the second-consecutive year.
Baiano, a sophomore from Bridgeville, Pa., qualified for three A-Finals at the GMAC/MEC Swimming Championships, while turning in the fastest time in the conference in both the 500 and 1650 freestyle events. She also swam in the A-Final of the 1000 free. In all, Baiano brought home All-MEC honors in four events (200 free, 500 free, 1000 free and 1650 free). At the MEC/GMAC Championship, Baiano led all MEC swimmers with 88 individual points scored.
Moorley, a freshman from Lutterworth, United Kingdom, turned in the top time in the Mountain East Conference in the 200 freestyle during the 2024 GMAC/MEC Championships in Canton. She also placed in the top six in the league in the 500 and 1000 freestyle events as a freshman. During last month’s GMAC/MEC Championships, Moorley had 51.5 individual points scored.
Under head coach Matt Brinton, Frostburg State repeated as MEC Men’s and Women’s Swimming Champions in 2023-24. In the final women’s standings, Frostburg State scored 964.50 points, while the men finished the four-day championship meet with 1,303 points.
