WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The 23
rd-ranked Glenville State wrestling team won five of the 10 individual championships on Saturday afternoon and maintained its early lead after preliminaries to take home its first-ever Mountain East Conference Wrestling Championship.
Glenville State won individual conference crowns at 125 (Hunter Ross), 133 (Gavin Quiocho), 157 (Guy DeLeonardis), 165 (Brady Ross) and 174 (Isaiha Casto). The Pioneers wrestled in nine of the 10 championship bouts.
West Liberty finished runner-up, getting edged by the Pioneers 153.5 to 136.0 in the final team standings.
The Hilltoppers also won five individual titles on Saturday, including Khyvon Grace at 141, Nico Taddy at 149, Ty McGeary at 184, Mason Christian at 197 and Francesco Borsellino at 285. In all, the Hilltoppers qualified for eight of the 10 championship bouts.
Fairmont State finished third in the team standings with 90.5, while Frostburg State finished fourth with 87.0 points. Notre Dame rounded out the top five with 65.0 points. Fairmont State had four third-place finishers on the afternoon. Frostburg State had one runner-up finish and three others that finished in third-place. NDC had two runner-up finishers and one third-place medalist.
The MEC wrestling programs will now turn their attention to regional championship competition, which is set for the weekend of March 2.
