ON TO THE FINAL FOUR: Lady Pioneers End Tampa’s 22-Game Winning Streak

SAINT JOSEPH, Mo. - The Glenville State women's basketball team battled the Trojans of the University of Tampa on Monday evening in the national quarterfinals and came out on top, 78-68. While the Lady Pioneers shot just 38.2 percent from the field, they out-rebounded Tampa 40-33. With the win, Glenville State snapped the Trojan's 22-game winning streak.

GSU got off to a slow start and did not make a shot until the 5:30 mark in the first quarter. With the Pioneer offense struggling early, Tampa opened the game on a 9-0 run. Breanna Campbell got going early scoring seven of the Lady Pioneers' first 13 points.

After trailing by as many as 10 in the opening quarter, GSU used a put-back jumper and a fast break layup, and trailing by just six (19-13) heading into the second quarter.

Throughout the second quarter Glenville State battled to shrink the Trojan's advantage down to a single possession. The press was key to the GSU comeback as the Lady Pioneers scored 13 points-off turnovers.

At the 1:46 mark, the Trojans took a six-point lead 35-29. However, Hya Haywood hit a three to make it a one-possession game once more. Mickayla Perdue's late jumper in the paint made it a one-point game as the teams went to the locker room.

Coming out of halftime, the Lady Pioneers took their first lead of the contest at 37-35 following a three by Perdue.

Neither team produced a substantial run in the third quarter and GSU went to the fourth with a 54-52 advantage. Breanna Campbell capped the third-quarter scoring for the Pioneers with a jumper at the 40 second mark.

During the fourth quarter, both teams continued to battle back and forth early. Tampa led 59-58 with 7:43 remaining in the quarter, but a three by Skylar Davidson at the 7:12 mark gave the Pionners the lead back at 61-59. Tampa tied the game one more time at 61-61 following a pair of free throws, but from that point GSU went on a 14-2 scoring run and grabbed a 12-point lead (75-63) with just 86 seconds reamining.

Breanna Campbell led the Lady Pioneers in scoring with 28 points to go with nine rebounds and four assists. Hya Haywood had 18 points while grabbing five rebounds. Perdue finished the evening with 10 points.
