MEC Announces Week 7 Football Awards

MEC Player of the Week is presented by The Health Plan

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – The Mountain East Conference today announced its Week 7 Football Players of the Week.
 
The MEC Football Player of the Week awards are presented by The Health Plan.
 
Charleston running back Chavon Wright was named the MEC Offensive Player of the Week, while West Liberty defensive lineman Cam Rice was honored as the Defensive Player of the Week. Notre Dame kicker Cameron Shirkey earned Special Teams Player of the Week accolades this week.
 
Wright, a redshirt sophomore from Pembroke Pines, Fla., rushed for 276 yards and three touchdowns as Charleston picked up a 52-27 win over Notre Dame on Saturday. Wright carried the ball 30 times and averaged 9.2 yards per carry. The 276 rushing yards was the ninth-highest single game rushing total in MEC history. Wright’s longest carry of the day was for 39 yards and he rushed for scores of 25-, 24-, and 2-yards.
 
Rice, a redshirt sophomore from Morgantown, W.Va., totaled 13 tackles (11 solo) in West Liberty’s 24-7 win over West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon. The 13 stops set a new career-high for Rice. The defensive lineman also chipped in 4.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble for the Hilltoppers.
 
Shirkey, a senior from Bloom Carroll, Ohio, went 2-for-2 on field goals and 3-for-3 on extra points on Saturday against UC. His performance included made field goal attempts of 29- and 47-yards. Shirkey’s third-quarter field goal of 47 yards helped him re-set the program record for longest field goal.
