Top Seeds Advance In Semifinal Round of MEC Acrobatics & Tumbling Championship

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The Frostburg State acrobatics & tumbling team advanced to their first Mountain East Conference Championship final on Friday evening, defeating West Virginia Wesleyan by a score of 255.125-243.485 in the first semifinal meet at Joe Retton Arena on the campus of Fairmont State University.
  
FSU took a small lead after the compulsory event with a total score of 35.500 – 34.075, earning a 9.55 in the pyramid and a 9.475 in the toss. WVWC came back in the acro event, taking the event by a 27.750 – 26.875 advantage, though Frostburg had the highest-scoring heat with a 9.625 in the seven-element. Both teams had great pyramid events, with each heat resulting in a 9.325 or better, with FSU just edging the event 28.725-28.200 to take a narrow 91.100-90.025 lead into halftime.
 
In the toss event, FSU put up a 9.425 in the open heat to help the Bobcats to an event win of 27.075 – 26.075. Frostburg was able to extend its lead in the tumbling event, scoring highly in the aerial (9.6), 6-element (9.1) and open (9.15) passes to the tune of a 51.350-46.375 advantage.
 
With a team score of 85.60 to Wesleyan's 81.010, the Frostburg crowd cheered the team into Sunday's Championship with an overall win by more than 11 points.
 
The win means that FSU will earn a guaranteed winning record on the season at 6-4 with one meet to go, while WVWC finishes their own impressive season at 5-3.

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Top-seeded Fairmont State won five of six events against fourth-seeded West Liberty on Friday night and overcame an 89.170-84.380 deficit in team event to advance to its third-consecutive Mountain East Conference Tournament Championship on Saturday afternoon.
 
Fairmont State won or tied seven of the first 10 heats in the meet to open up a 91.400-86.925 halftime lead over the Hilltoppers. Fairmont State’s first half performance was highlighted by a 9.650 in the compulsory toss, a 9.475 in open pyramid, and a 9.375 in the compulsory pyramid.
 
After a close toss event, Fairmont State nearly doubled its lead in the tumbling event with a 52.850-48.050 advantage in the six heats. In the synchronized passes, Fairmont State posted an 8.425 in the duo pass and added an 8.375 in the trio pass to take the early advantage in the event. After West Liberty outscored Fairmont State in the aerial pass (9.600-9.150), the Falcons finished the event strong with a 9.375 in the six-element pass and an event- and meet-high 9.775 in the open pass by Alexis Smith, the 2021 and 2022 MEC Athlete of the Year in the sport of Acrobatics & Tumbling.
 
Fairmont State entered the team event with nearly a 10-point advantage (170.150-160.450) and closed out the win despite the scoring deficit in team event – winning the meet by a 254.530-249.620 final margin.
 
The 2022 MEC Acrobatics & Tumbling Championship will continue Saturday morning with Individual Event Finals beginning at 11 a.m. inside Joe Retton Arena. The championship meet featuring top-seeded Fairmont State and second-seeded Frostburg State will begin at 3 p.m. on Saturday afternoon to wrap up the day.
