Hannah Berlin Headlines 2022 MEC Women's Swimming Awards

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – Notre Dame’s Hannah Berlin highlighted the Mountain East Conference women’s swimming postseason honors on Thursday morning as the 2021-22 MEC Swimmer of the Year. Frostburg State’s Kendall Hooper was named the league’s freshman of the year, while her coach Andrew Foltz earned the nod as the Coach of the Year.

Berlin, a junior from Doylestown, Ohio, posted the fastest time in the MEC in both the 200 and 500 freestyle events during the GMAC/MEC Swimming Championships, while placing second in the conference in the 1000 and 1650 freestyle events. Her performance at the conference championship meet included school record performances in three events (200 Free, 500 Free, 1000 Free). She was also part of two relay teams that earned all-conference honors for NDC, including a second-place finish in the 400 medley relay and a third-place finish in the 800 free relay.

Hooper, a freshman from Catonsville, Md., had three “A” final appearances at the GMAC/MEC Championships this winter, including a second-place finish in the 200 butterfly, a fourth-place finish in the 400 IM and an eighth-place finish in the 100 freestyle. In all, she earned All-MEC honors in four individual events during the championship, including first team honors in the 200 IM, 400 IM and 200 butterfly, while adding second team honors in the 100 free. She was also part of three first team All-MEC relay teams (400 Medley, 800 Free, 400 Free) and was a part of five record breaking performances at Frostburg State this season (3 individual record, 2 relay records).

First-year Frostburg State head coach Andrew Foltz garnered MEC Coach of the Year honors after leading the Bobcats to the 2022 MEC Swimming Championship this winter. The Bobcats held the top spot on the leaderboard following each of the four days and racked up 21 All-MEC performances during the championship, including 10 first-time All-MEC swims. Foltz also guided the FSU men to a third-place finish in Canton.

The MEC all-conference teams (first-team, second-team, honorable mention) were recognized in February based on the final results in each event at the 2022 GMAC/MEC Swimming and Diving Championships.
