Braves Sweep MEC Women's Swimming Awards

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- UNC Pembroke swept the 2021 Mountain East Conference's top honors for women's swimming as Gillian Manning was named Swimmer of the Year, while teammate Anna Miller was selected as the league's Freshman of the Year, and UNCP head coach Oscar Roverato was tabbed as the league's Coach of the Year.

Manning, a senior from Fayetteville, N.C., was the only individual from the Mountain East Conference to qualify for the NCAA Division II Championships this year making it in the 200 and 500 freestyle events and the 200 butterfly. She was victorious in those events at the GMAC/MEC Championships just a few weeks later, setting a new meet record in the 200 fly. She was named the "Swimmer of the Meet" for her performances at the championships.

Miller, a freshman from Fayetteville, N.C., had the top time among MEC freshmen in several events during the season. She had the fastest time among conference freshmen in the 200, 500 and 1,650 freestyle events, as well as both the 100 and 200 breaststroke and 400 IM. Her time in the 200 IM was the second-fastest among conference swimmers. She had a productive meet for the Braves at the GMAC/MEC Championships finishing ninth in the 400 IM, 10th in the 200 IM and also swimming legs on the winning 400 and 800 freestyle relays.

Roverato is the Coach of the Year for a second-straight season after leading the Braves to the 2021 MEC Women's Swimming title. The Braves finished third overall at the GMAC/MEC Championships -- the highest finish for any MEC team since the championship began in 2018 -- and finished with 964 points. He coached the team to nine wins at the meet and three meet records.
