Preview: MEC Wrestling Championship

The Mountain East Conference will conduct its first wrestling championship this Saturday, Feb. 1, at the ASRC on the campus of West Liberty University. 

The championship will feature athletes from six schools (Davis & Elkins, Fairmont State, Notre Dame, UNC Pembroke, Urbana and West Liberty) competing in their weight class. By the end of Saturday, 10 weight class champions will be crowned, along with the league's first champion and the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler.  

Notre Dame is ranked fifth in the country in the NWCA poll, while West Liberty is ranked 16th and UNC Pembroke is receiving votes. This Saturday's tournament will also feature several regionally and nationally ranked wrestlers.

UNCP's Nick Daggett is the top seed at 125 in a weight class that has four wrestlers. Daggett 17-5 this year and is ranked seventh in the country. He is 4-2 against nationally ranked wrestlers this year, including one over No. 3 Cole Laya, who will not compete this weekend. Instead, WLU's Corey Secrist will take the mat for the 'Toppers. He's a two-year starter at 125 for WLU and is 22-5 this season. Davis & Elkins' Vincent Scollo is seeded third and and Notre Dame's Johnny Craker is seeded fourth.

Notre Dame's Hunter Bray, the nation's top-ranked wrestler and a third-place finisher at the NCAA Championships last season, is the No. 1 seed at 133. Bray is 17-2 on the year and impressive finishes at the Ohio Intercollegiate Open (5th), Findlay Open (2nd) and Lake Erie Open (3rd). D&E's Craig Cook is seeded second in the weight class. He is one of two Senators to have 20+ wins this year (23-9). West Liberty's Tommy Curtain is seeded third and has a pair of wins over conference opponents this season. UNCP freshman Logan Seliga is 5-5 this year with four of those wins earning bonus points and is the No. 4 seed. Fairmont State's Levi Smith (5-7) is seeded fifth and Eric Fulwider (3-12) is sixth.

Notre Dame also has the top-seeded wrestler at 141 pounds in Kelan McKenna. McKenna, an All-American in 2018, is ranked seventh in the country and has a pair of recent wins over ranked opponents, including No. 8 Jacob Ealy from Pitt-Johnstown and No. 10 Chandler Minnard of Ashland. UNCP's Jon Miller has racked up 26 wins this season and is seeded second. West Liberty's Jacob Simpson (19-7) is ranekd third, followed by Fairmont State's Devan Hamrick, Davis & Elkins' Nicholas Natarcola and Urbana's Jacob Edwards.

Tyler Makosy from UNC Pembroke is the top seed at 149 pounds. Makosky is 25-10 this year after wrestling the first half of the season at 157 pounds. He is nearing 100 career victories (96-54) and has 12 bonus-point wins this season. West Liberty's Jaime Ward is seeded second after going 10-10 so far during his freshman season. Urbana's Jared Ford is the No. 4 seed, Fairmont State's Digger Dennison is fifth and Notre Dame's Jesse Jaime is sixth.

Notre Dame's Tatlor Misuna, an All-American in 2018, is the No. 1 seed at 157 pounds. He's 5-2 this year, and is coming off wins over Nate Trepagnier (Lindenwood) and Jacob Burgette (Pitt-Johnstown) at the NWCA National Duals. Urbana sophomore Cole Houser is seeded second at the weight class after with a 16-5 record this season. He's ranked fourth in Super Region 3. D&E's John Finnerty has a 13-4 record and is the No. 3 seed. UNCP's Sammy Peticos is 16-9 this year, but is 1-1 against nationally ranked competition, and is seeded fourth. West Liberty's Blake Miller is fifth, and Fairmont State's Cale McMurdy is sixth.

UNCP's Kaleb Warner is the top seed at 165 pounds. He is 18-10 this year with 10 falls to his credit. On the other side of the bracket, Davis & Elkins' Noah Tarr is 25-7 and ranks among the nation's leaders with 15 falls. Chase Morgan (11-7), who has wins over the top two seeds in the MEC this year, is seeded third. Fairmont State's Cade Moisey, who is 8-9 this year with a win over Morgan, is fourth. Notre Dame's Jordon Tague is fifth and Urbana's Jacob Lees is sixth.

The Braves have another No. 1 seed with Garrett Hill taking the top spot at 174 pounds. Hill is 17-5 on the year with five of his wins going for bonus points. Notre Dame's Emilio Fowler is seeded second with a record of 12-11. Chance Morgan of West Liberty is third, followed by Chad Tracy of Davis & Elkins, Dylan Knotts of Urbana and Tucker Lawson of Fairmont State.

Two-time All-American Tony Vezzetti of Notre Dame is the top seed at 184. He comes into this week's championship with a 13-7 record. He'll be challenged by West Liberty freshman Zane Lanham, who is also nationally ranked, and comes into the championship with a 16-3 record. UNCP's Brandon Sloop has 24 wins this year and is the No. 3 seed, followed by Davis & Elkins' Kyle Wojtazsek and Urbana's Connor Dixon.

Nick Kee, who joined the team at the start of the spring semester, is the top seed at 197. Kee is unbeaten so far in competition going 3-0 at the Tracy Borah Duals and 4-0 at the Kutztown Duals. Six of his seven wins have earned bonus points, including four falls. Notre Dame's Mike Viramontes is seeded second with his 15-10 record. West Liberty's Robbie D'Amico is next, followed by Charles Morrison of Davis & Elkins, John Halajian of Fairmont State and Major Stratton of Urbana.

Notre Dame's Jared Campbell is ranked as high as No. 2 in a national poll and is the No. 1 seed for the MEC Tournament. He has wins over the nation's No. 2, 3 and 4-ranked wrestlers this season and is 17-4. West Liberty's Chris Cook is 14-6 this year and has wins over three league opponents, but lost to Campbell head-to-head earlier this season. Fairmont State's T.J. Boyd is seeded third with an 8-6 record, and UNC Pembroke's Ryan Monk is No. 4. Urbana's Nick Baker is seeded fifth, and Daimere Wilson-Turner from Davis & Elkins is seeded sixth.
