In 2018-19, the Mountain East Conference began its "Dear Sport" initiative where student-athletes in the conference were encouraged to write a letter to their sport. The initiative provides the opportunity for student-athletes to express in their own words the impact that sports has played in shaping them throughout their lives.

Below is a letter from Abigail Gabauer, a basketball player at West Virginia Wesleyan.
Dear Basketball,
The butterflies that fill my stomach are unreal when you come to mind. We have experienced the highest of highs and the lowest of lows together in our relationship. You have given me the opportunity to grow as a person both mentally and physically. You have helped me gain lifelong friendships, and you have helped lead me closer to God.
You have also taken things away from me. I lost my ability to play for an extended time period after tearing my ACL. You taught me that no matter what life throws at you, it’s the way you handle it that determines your true character. The rehab process changed me as a person and altered my mindset about the sport, making me who I am today.
You have given me the opportunity to make a difference not only in my own life, but in the lives of others as well. Too often we take for granted the simple things in life and do not realize the blessings that we have until they are taken away. My passion for you has grown exponentially and continues to grow each day. I value every moment I share with you both on and off the court. It is such a great privilege to be part of your world and to be part of a team that I can call my family. We could never be as good alone as we are together.
You taught me that when things aren’t going my way, I need to step back and admire everything that I have been blessed with. No beauty shines greater than that of a grateful heart. With you comes accepting challenges, learning patience, facing adversity, and taking risks, despite whatever fears we may have as individuals. You inspire my work ethic, encourage respect for others and teach me commitment, discipline, sacrifice, dedication, and perseverance. You continually remind me that I can only control what I can control. You have impressed upon me that success is never guaranteed, it is earned.
I have come to understand the value in effort and positive attitude in the classroom as well as on the court. I have learned how to properly manage my time and how to organize my priorities through you. Thank you for captivating me, allowing me to experience unforgettable moments, and driving me to always be the absolute best that I can be.
Most importantly, you have shown me how to compete for the ones that I love. Glory be to God because despite the outcome of any situation, I trust in His plan for me. You, basketball, are a true blessing to my life and I will be forever grateful for you.
Thank you,
Abigail Gabauer
