BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – The Mountain East Conference has announced the winners of this week’s Male and Female Tennis Player of the Week awards. The MEC Player of the Week awards are presented by The Health Plan.
Charleston’s Elias Lagger has been named the MEC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week while Fairmont State’s Maria Forsecca has been named the MEC Women’s Tennis Player of the Week.
Lagger, a junior from Austria, against Frostburg, Elias won his doubles match 6-0, and singles match 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Against WV Wesleyan, he won his doubles 6-4 and his singles 6-3, 7-6.
Forsecca, a senior from Porto, Portugal, went 2-0 on the week as Maria Fonseca led the way with a 4-0 week. In the team's 5-2 win over West Virginia Wesleyan, Fonseca and Stephanie Gopar defeated Andrea Martinez Garrido/ Emilie Bergmann at No. 2 doubles, 6-3. At No. 1 singles, Fonseca bested Dominique Jansen van Vuuren, 6-4/6-4. The Falcons then swept West Virginia State, 7-0 as Fonseca and Gopar took down Talia Nichols/ Daniela Cruzado Fretel at No. 2 doubles, 6-3. Then at No. 1 singles, Fonseca defeated Maria Mercedes Kaltakian, 6-4/6-4.
