BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — The Mountain East Conference announced Monday the winners of this week’s Volleyball Player of the Week awards. The MEC Player of the Week awards are presented by The Health Plan.
Wheeling’s Camryn Matus is the MEC Offensive Player of the Week, while West Virginia State’s Nicole Gartner Custodio is the MEC Defensive Player of the Week.
Matus, a 5-foot-10 setter from Brunswick, Ohio, led the Cardinals to wins against Gannon, Shippensburg, and California (PA). The freshman finished with 62 kills on 126 total attacks, finishing with a .373 hitting percentage. Matus set a new career high in kills during each of the four games on the weekend.
Gartner Custodio, a 6-3 middle blocker from Brazil, helped the Yellow Jackets to a 2-2 weekend. In a five-set win against Clarion, she tallied five total blocks, and then had four total blocks against California (PA). She capped the weekend with a season-high seven total blocks in a four-set win against Shippensburg.
