BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — Davis & Elkins won the NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Regional Men’s Golf Championship in dramatic fashion, and fellow Mountain East Conference member Charleston placed third. Both MEC teams advance to the NCAA Division II National Championship, which is set for May 19 through May 23 at the PGA National Resort in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
The Senators tied with host Gannon after 54 holes, with both teams shooting 887 at Whispering Woods Golf Club in Erie, Pennsylvania. The NCAA’s tiebreaker was won by Davis & Elkins, giving the program its second regional championship in the past three seasons (2023).
Aidan Talent, the MEC Freshman of the Year, led the field with a 3-under, including an opening-round 4-under par. Elias Jarn also impressed, shooting 3-over-par across 54 holes, including 1-under in Round 3. Talented was named Tournament MVP.
“This young team showed lots of growth throughout the year,” D&E coach Patrick Smith said. “I'm so proud of them for their performance this week. I'm thrilled that this team comprised of freshman and sophomores could accomplish such an incredible feat. We are looking forward to representing D&E on the national stage for the fifth year in a row.”
Davis & Elkins sandwiched rounds of +6 to open and close the tournament around +12 in Round 2.
“We played well on Day 1," Smith said. “Aidan's -4 round was the best round of the first day. On Day 2 we didn't have our best stuff, but we still managed to post an OK number. The final round we got off to a good start. We took advantage of the opportunities on the golf course and finished up with a regional championship.”
UC finished third behind D&E and Gannon at +39 — 15 strokes back. The Golden Eagles were led by Carlos Fernandez Mortera and William Carestam, each who finished +6. Mortera bettered each round, going from +3 to +2 to +1. Carestam started hot with an even par performance in Round 1, which included birdies on Nos. 5, 10, 12, and 15 for the MEC Player of the Year.
