MEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships Recap | Day 1

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — After Day 1 of the Mountain East Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, the University of Charleston holds the lead in the men’s and women’s standings.

Following Sunday’s six finals — three in men’s and three in women’s — UC holds the edge over Point Park in the three-day event at the Track & Field Complex at Mylan Park. The Golden Eagles’ men have 45 points, followed by PPU’s 31, and West Virginia Wesleyan’s 12. On the women’s side, UC has 46 points, followed by Point Park’s 17, and Davis & Elkins’ 14.

In Sunday’s action, UC’s Luke Messinger took home the title in the Men’s Hammer Throw. Messinger’s teammates, Jullian Matthews and Frankie Winter, took second and third, respectively. At the Outdoor event, the top three in any finals event earn MEC all-conference honors based on performance, with the order of finish determine first team, second team, and honorable mention.

Charleston also dominated the Women’s Hammer Throw, with Brooke Burns dominating the field, followed by teammates Ella Nilsson and Mia Huber.

In the Men’s Javelin Throw, Point Park swept the top three spots: Nick Zaller (1st), Ben Blahovec (2nd), and Chevaughn Fletcher (3rd). In the Women’s Javelin Throw, UC’s Kalista Milne took home first place, followed by Concord’s Cassidy Hammonds and Point Park’s Lina Single.

Sunday night was capped by the finals in the 10,000-meter race. Charleston’s Zane “Iggy” Chalker finished in 30:19.51 to take first place on the men’s side, followed by Davis & Elkins’ Jordan Thomas and UC’s Corey Schobelock. On the women’s side, Point Park’s Cassandra O’Connor finished first, followed by Davis & Elkins teammates Lydia Falkenstein and Savanna Hardman.

Day 2 of the MEC Outdoor Track & Field Championship gets underway Monday at 11 a.m. There will be six field finals events: Men’s and Women’s Shot Put; Men’s and Women’s Long Jump; Men’s High Jump; and Women’s Pole Vault. The night will conclude with the Men’s 3K Steeplechase at 8 p.m., and the Women’s 3K Steeplechase at 8:30 p.m.
