BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. - The Mountain East Conference announced Monday the winner of this week’s Co-Women’s Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week. The weekly awards are presented by The Health Plan.
Concord’s Cassidy Hammonds and Point Park’s Dunya Van den Tooren share week one honors.
Hammonds, a sophomore from Lee, Virginia, 2,918 points in the pentathlon over the weekend as she finished eighth in the five-event sequence at Liberty University Kick-Off. She was second overall among Division II competitors. She scored 773 points in the 60-meter hurdles and added 639 points in the 800-meter run. In the field events, Hammonds tossed 8.22 meters in the shot put which was a career-best throw. Hammonds' total was less than 50 points from her own school record and is the top mark in the MEC after opening weekend.
Van den Tooren, a sophomore from Gouda, the Netherlands, has a great opening weekend at the Youngstown State University Icebreaker. She achieved two different NCAA Provisional Marks in the Long Jump and High Jump. While in the long jump, she set a school record with a 5.75-meter jump. While in the high jump, she turned in the second-best mark in school history with a 1.70-meter jump. She also turned in a personal best in the triple jump (11.51-meters) and in the 60-meter hurdles (9.55).
