Indoor Track & Field Championships: Day 1 Update

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The University of Charleston sits atop the men’s and women’s leaderboard following day one at the 2024 MEC Indoor Track & Field Championships.
 
On the men’s leaderboard, Charleston has 51 points, while Frostburg State and West Liberty are in second and third place with 35 and 33 points, respectively. UC also tops the women’s leaderboard with 51 points, and is followed closely by West Virginia Wesleyan (40) in second and Wheeling (32) in third.
 
A total of 11 events crowned champions today (listed below), including three meet records and six NCAA provisional marks.
 
The meet records included Frostburg State’s Thomas McCoy in the men’s pole vault (4.85m), West Liberty’s Ky’Ara Ross in the women’s long jump (5.63m) and Wheeling’s Keala McCurry in the women’s Pole Vault (3.51m).
 
The NCAA provisional marks included Charleston in the men’s distance medley relay (10:03.29) and McCoy in the men’s Pole Vault (4.85m). A trio of competitors also set NCAA provisional marks in the 5000m, including Concord’s Logan Zuchelli (14:15.33), Charleston’s Zane Chalker (14:23.29) and Davis & Elkins’ Charlie Stephenson (14:25.17).
 
UC’s Julie LaFare also set an NCAA provisional in the women’s 5000m (17:12.87).
 
The second day of events gets underway at 10 a.m. Saturday with the conclusion of the men’s Heptathlon. Live video coverage will begin at 11 a.m. on the Mountain East Digital Network.
