MEC Announces Indoor Track & Field Weekly Honors

MEC Athlete of the Week is presented by The Health Plan

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – Charleston’s Warren Thiel was voted this week’s Mountain East Conference Men’s Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week, while West Virginia State’s Candace Morris and Charleston’s Beth Sykes shared women’s accolades.
 
The MEC Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week awards are presented by The Health Plan.
 
Thiel, a junior from Johannesburg, SA, turned in an NCAA provisional time of 1:50.48 in the 800m at the Boston U Valentine Invitational over the weekend. The time was the second-fastest in league and program history. The time currently ranks 11th nationally and second in the MEC this season, behind his UC teammate George Couttie.
 
Morris, a freshman from Charleston, W.Va., won the 60 meter over the weekend at the Marshall Invitational, turning in a time of 7.59 seconds. The mark currently ranks first in the MEC this season and accomplished an NCAA provisional mark. The time was also the second-fastest in league history.
 
Sykes ran a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 4:53.06 in the mile at the Boston U Valentine Invitational over the weekend. The time was the second-fastest in school and conference history. The time is also the fastest in the MEC this season.
