WEST CHESTER, Pa. — Fairmont State’s 13-match unbeaten streak came to an end Sunday afternoon in the NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer Championship.
The Falcons fell to host West Chester, 2-0, in the second round at Rockwell Field. Fairmont State won the MEC North Division title, the MEC Women’s Soccer Championship, and in Friday’s NCAA tournament first round against Kutztown in an historic season for the program.
In Sunday’s loss, West Chester got on the board in the 32nd minute when Lindsey Balmer tucked a ball into the top right portion of the goal to open scoring. Faith Matter assisted on the goal. The Rams controlled the game, out-shooting the Falcons, 24-12, including 10-6 on shots on goal. West Chester added an insurance goal in the 84th minute to seal the victory and advance in the bracket. Olivia Johnston made eight saves in goal for Fairmont State.
Fairmont State finished the season 17-2-3, including 10-1-3 in MEC competition. The Falcons entered Sunday’s match ranked No. 1 in Division II in goals — 76 — and No. 2 in goals per game — 3.62. The program produced the 2025 MEC Defensive Player of the Year, Filippa Stalhammar, who tallied her first career two-goal game in Fairmont State’s 2-1 win against Kutztown on Friday morning. Falcons coach Kernell Borneo was named the 2025 MEC Coach of the Year in a vote of his peers.
Overall, Fairmont State had four players recognized on the All-MEC first team: Stalhammar and fellow defender Agne Bjork; forward Valentina Gianinetto; and midfielder Montserrat Diaz.
