FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Fairmont State scored a pair of goals in each half to defeat the University of Charleston, 4-1, in the 2025 Mountain East Conference Women’s Soccer Championship final Sunday afternoon at Duvall-Rosier Field.
The Falcons captured the tournament crown for the second time in four seasons, winning its first MEC championship in 2022. In Sunday’s final, Fairmont State tallied four goals, the most in MEC history for a tournament champion. The Falcons, the MEC North Division regular season champs, entered Sunday’s final as the NCAA Division II leader in goals scored.
Agnes Maerta Bjoerk, a sophomore from Sweden, opened scoring in the 30th minute when a header off of a corner kick from a teammate hit the crossbar and Bjoerk’s second header beat UC keeper Ines Degli Esposti. In the 43rd minute, Payton Parliament, a freshman from Plattsburgh, New York, took a pass from Montserrat Diaz, and struck a ball with her right foot as she fell to the ground, sneaking a shot into the left side of the goal.
Early in the second half, South Division No. 3 seed Charleston (10-8-3) responded with a goal by Sydney Crowe. On the play, the Golden Eagles dislodged the ball near midfield and then Jamie Bland, a junior from England, found Crowe, a junior from Wilmington, Ohio, in stride, cutting the deficit in half in the 50th minute.
From there, the Falcons took over. Filippa Stalhammar, the 2025 MEC Defensive Player of the Year, scored in the 61st minute on another assist by Diaz. Stalhammar, a graduate student from Sweden, headed home a ball off of a corner kick to make it 3-1. In the 80th minute, Serenity Thomas, a junior from Calvert, Maryland, scored her ninth goal of the season to seal the title for the Falcons.
Fairmont State, which improved to 16-1-3, will carry a 12-match unbeaten streak in the NCAA tournament. The Falcons secured the MEC’s automatic qualifying berth by virtue of Sunday’s victory against the Golden Eagles.
