MEC Football: Week 8 Preview

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — Week 8 of the Division II college football season features MEC-leading Frostburg State on the road against Wheeling. The Bobcats, at 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the MEC, are the only league team with four conference wins after knocking off Charleston in the capital city of West Virginia last Saturday. Frostburg State ended UC's 15-game conference winning streak and are the team with the most points outside of the AFCA Top 25 poll. The winner of Frostburg-Wheeling will sit at the top of the MEC standings entering the regular season's final month.
Another marquee matchup will be Charleston at Fairmont State, the two teams that occupied the top two spots in the MEC preseason coaches poll. UC is the defending MEC champion and the Falcons have reeled off consecutive wins.
Overall, four teams have one conference loss: Frostburg State, Charleston, Glenville State, and Wheeling, which means the race for the regular season title is heating up on the final October football Saturday of the 2025 season.

Notable

• Streak no more: Frostburg State defeated Charleston last Saturday to end the Golden Eagles’ 15-game MEC winning streak.
• The Golden Eagles’ most recent loss in league play prior to last Saturday came on Oct. 21, 2023 at Fairmont State, a 33-30 Falcons win.
• Concord averaged 7.7 yards per carry last weekend, the best single game mark by an MEC team in 2025.
• Fairmont State running back Leonard Farrow had an 86-yard run at Edinboro, the longest rush by an MEC player this season. That honor would have went to West Liberty’s Hunter Patterson, who had an 84-yard carry last weekend.
• Frostburg State QB Jordan Brooks’ 389-yard passing output at UC was tied for the second most among MEC passers this season. It is the most passing yards by an MEC quarterback on the road.
• WLU running back Hunter Patterson has consecutive 100-yard rushing performances. The Hilltoppers are 2-0 when he reaches triple digits on the ground, and 0-5 when he does not. Patterson now has five career 100-yard rushing games.
• Fairmont State specialist Ethan Vargo-Thomas, this week’s MEC Special Teams Player of the Week, has recorded the three longest punts by an MEC player this season: 77, 71, and 66 yards.
• Hunter Patterson recorded his second consecutive three-touchdown game, the seventh time an MEC player has recorded a hat trick of non-throwing touchdowns this season. Patterson is the only MEC player who has multiple three-touchdown games this season.
• Fairmont State’s Leonard Farrow ranks No. 8 in Division II in all-purpose yards per game, just ahead of WLU’s Hunter Patterson (No. 14 in D2).

• Concord quarterback Tyler Mizzell is in the top 10 in Division II in passing yards (seventh), passing touchdowns (seventh), and total offense (fourth).
• CU QB Tyler Mizzell had a 63-yard run last Saturday, the longest by any Mountain Lions player this season. The longest run by any other player on the team is 29 yards.
• Fairmont State specialist Emmanuel Richardson is continuing his pursuit of perfection. Richardson has not missed an extra point attempt in 120 career tries — the most makes and attempts by an MEC kicker without a miss in league history.
• There have been four games of 250 or more all-purpose yards in the MEC this season, and West Liberty’s Hunter Patterson has two of them. Although Fairmont State’s Leonard Farrow still holds the season-best with 332 all-purpose yards on Aug. 28 against Seton Hill, Patterson has consecutive games of 271 and 271 all-purpose yards.
