BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — The Mountain East Conference announced Monday the winners of this week’s Football Player of the Week awards. The MEC Player of the Week awards are presented by The Health Plan.
University of Charleston quarterback Matthew Frye and Glenville State running back Jeremiah King are MEC Co-Offensive Players of the Week. Concord’s Nehemiah Scott is the MEC Defensive Player of the Week, and UC’s Caleb Barringer is the MEC Special Teams Player of the Week.
Frye, a redshirt freshman from Madison, West Virginia, who was making his first career start on the road, helped engineer a comeback from a 25-point first half deficit. Frye completed 16 of 31 passes for 182 yards and one touchdown. He also rushed for 28 yards and a touchdown, including a 5-yard score late in the third quarter that pulled the Golden Eagles within 4 points.
King, a sophomore from Clarksburg, West Virginia, logged 27 carries for 160 yards and one touchdown in the Pioneers’ win against West Liberty. He set season highs for rushing attempts and yards on the ground, recording his fourth consecutive 100-yard rushing game and sixth consecutive game with a rushing touchdown.
Scott, a junior from Richmond, Virginia, put together an all-around defensive gem: eight tackles, four-and-a-half tackles for a loss, two sacks, and one pass breakup in the Mountain Lions’ win against West Virginia Wesleyan. Scott had the most tackles for a loss by a CU player this season, and it was also a career best for him.
Barringer, a sophomore from Charlotte, North Carolina, had three punt returns for 85 yards, including a 57-yard return in a clutch situation. Early in the fourth quarter, Barringer fielded a punt at the UC 24-yard line and raced 59 yards to put the Golden Eagles offense in the red zone down by 4 points. Two plays later, UC scored to take the lead for good.
