BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — The Mountain East Conference announced Monday the winners of this week’s Football Player of the Week awards. The MEC Player of the Week awards are presented by The Health Plan.
Frostburg State quarterback Jordan Brooks and West Liberty running back Hunter Patterson have been named MEC Co-Offensive Players of the Week. Frostburg State defensive lineman Rainer Haveland is the MEC Defensive Player of the Week. Fairmont State punter Ethan Vargo-Thomas has been selected as the MEC Special Teams Player of the Week.
Brooks set career-highs in completions (24) and passing yards (389) in the Bobcats’ 32-30 triple overtime win at Charleston. The sophomore signal-caller from Taneytown, Maryland, equaled a career-best four touchdown passes in regulation, and then added a scoring toss on a 2-point conversion in the third OT that ended UC’s 15-game MEC winning streak.
Patterson piled up a career-high 247 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the ground in West Liberty’s win against West Virginia Wesleyan. The junior from Chester, West Virginia, had a career-long 84-yard touchdown run, and recorded his second consecutive game of at least 270 all-purpose yards. Patterson has two of the four best all-purpose performances in the MEC this season.
Haveland established new career-highs for tackles (nine) and sacks (two) against University of Charleston, one of the top offenses in the MEC. The senior from Waterford, Virginia, entered with career-bests of seven tackles and had one sack this season, in the season opener. Haveland had a second quarter sack on a drive that ended in a UC punt, and another sack in overtime.
Vargo-Thomas booted four punts for an average of 49.5 yards in Fairmont State’s non-conference win at Edinboro. The sophomore from Oak Hill, West Virginia, had a long punt of 66 yards, pinned one punt inside the 20, and had two punts eclipse 50 yards. Vargo-Thomas has the three longest punts by an MEC player this season: 77, 71, and 66 yards.
