TROUTVILLE, Va. – Davis & Elkins defeated Fairmont State 14-5 to advance to Sunday’s MEC Softball Championship Game without a loss, while the University of Charleston won three games in the loser’s bracket on Saturday to earn its spot in the championship game.
The Senators and Golden Eagles are set for a Noon start on Sunday, as the game was moved up one hour to avoid wet weather later in the afternoon. If UC wins game one, a second championship game will be played approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
In the winner’s bracket final, Davis & Elkins scored seven runs in the top of the second inning and never looked back in the runaway 14-5 victory which ended after just five innings of play. D&E racked up 13 hits in the game, including two doubles by Sharon Morales and a double apiece by Linzey Allard and Kailynn Parks. Allard and Anjolina Gutierrez each drive in three runs for the Senators. Gutierrez also had four stolen bases in the game.
Fairmont State also committed five errors in the loss, which led to four Davis & Elkins unearned runs.
The University of Charleston, who suffered a 4-3 loss to Davis & Elkins on Friday evening, battled through the loser’s bracket to make it to Sunday’s Championship Game. UC began the day by defeating Glenville State by a 4-3 final in extra innings. The Golden Eagles scored an unearned run in the eighth inning to walk-off the victory.
Next, UC blanked Notre Dame by a final score of 8-0 in both teams second game of the day. NDC won its first game of the day with a 3-2 win over West Virginia Wesleyan in the noon time slot.
Against NDC, Charleston’s Danie Bauer threw just 65 pitches and threw a two-hitters to lock up the Golden Eagle victory. Bauer struck out six batters to improve to 12-5 on the season.
In the final game of the day, UC held off a late push by Fairmont State to win 10-5. Charleston scored seven runs in the first three innings to take control of the game, before Fairmont cut into the final margin with five runs late.
Charleston finished the game with 10 hits, including a triple by Reagan West and doubles by Hannah Rose and Isabella Andujar.
