HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Charleston women and West Liberty men will enter day 2 of the Mountain East Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships with the lead on the team leaderboards.
Charleston scored 70 points on day one, followed by West Liberty (61), West Virginia Wesleyan (28), Wheeling (21) and Frostburg State (20) on the women’s team leaderboard.
West Liberty (64.5) leads on the men’s leaderboard, followed by Charleston (45), Frostburg State (25.5), Glenville State (23) and Concord (20).
In women’s competition, West Virginia Wesleyan’s Samantha Cash opened the day with a victory in the pentathlon event. Her score of 3,345 set a Mountain East Conference Championship meet record and also hit an NCAA provisional mark. She also broke meet records in the Pentathlon 60m hurdles, high jump, long jump and 800m.
Charleston earned three event victories on Friday with Miriam Dreher winning the long jump (5.61m) and Flora Tissier winning the 5000m (17:05.92). Charleston was also victorious in the distance medley relay with an MEC meet record time of 12:19.82. Dreher tied an MEC meet record in the long jump, while Tissier hit an NCAA provisional mark in the 5000m.
Wheeling’s Keala McCurry (pole vault, 3.48m) and West Liberty’s Kennedy Martin (shot put, 12.45m) also earned individual first-place victories on day one.
On the men’s side, West Liberty broke a meet record and hit an NCAA provisional mark in the Distance Medley Relay with a time of 10:01.57. Issac Prather also hit an NCAA provisional mark in the men’s 5000m with a time of 14:21.81.
Charleston earned two individual event victories in men’s events on Friday with Mathias Mees winning the long jump (6.96m) and Kellen Tropack winning the shot put (16.92m).
To end the night in the men’s pole vault event, West Liberty’s Reese Burnside edged out Glenville State’s Haden Coon with a height of 4.70m.
