MEC Women's Soccer: Quarterfinals Recap

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – The semifinals are set following a full Sunday that featured four quarterfinal matchups in the 2023 Mountain East Conference Women’s Soccer Tournament.
 
Wednesday’s semifinal round kicks off at 4 p.m. with Charleston hosting West Virginia State. In the bottom half of the bracket, MEC North Division Champion Frostburg State will host Concord at 4:30 p.m.
 
Three of the four remaining teams in the tournament are from the MEC South Division.
 
Charleston advanced to the semifinals with a 3-1 win over Fairmont State on Sunday afternoon. The 2023 MEC Offensive Player of the Year, Jaime Lina scored two of Charleston’s three goals in the win to lead the Golden Eagles. Carina Widauer also added a goal and an assist for the Golden Eagles.
 
Fairmont State senior Kiera Kuzinski put the Falcons on the board late in the second half on a goal that was assisted by Tegan Wheeler.
 
In South Euclid, West Virginia State’s Ammy Mwasambu scored a goal early in the first overtime that proved to be the different in the 2-1 victory. The goal came in the 94th minute and was assisted by first team All-MEC standout Esther Dhiramo.
 
West Virginia State’s Paula Harold was the first to score in the game in the 12th minute, before Notre Dame’s Miriam Szijarto provided the equalizer in the 50th minute.
 
Concord took a 2-0 lead over West Liberty and held on for a 2-1 win after a second half goal by the Hilltoppers. Concord’s Sydney Tucker was the first to find the back of the net for the Mountain Lions with and assist from Olivia Bekeleski in the 41st minute. Early in the second half, Alexa Todd made it 2-0 Concord with an assist from Reeanna Cook.
 
West Liberty got on the board just 24 seconds late on a successful PK from Amelia Compston.
 
The final game to kick-off on Sunday featured a 1-0 final with Frostburg State taking down Glenville State. FSU’s Catherine Smith provided the only goal of the game with an assist from Mei Homman in the 13th minute.
 
The Bobcat defense held Glenville State off the scoreboard the rest of the way with Ashley Bilger recording a pair of saves on GSU scoring opportunities. GSU goalkeeper Mikayla Brown also put together a strong performance in the Pioneer goal, recording seven saves.
