UC Blanks Queens In NCAA Tournament Opener

Giorgos Diakos scored three goals for the Golden Eagles

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The second-seeded Charleston men’s soccer team rolled to a 7-0 win over tenth-seeded Queens (NY) on Saturday evening at the Welch Athletic Complex in Charleston. UC grabbed a 4-0 lead in the opening half and added three more goals in the second half.
 
With the win, Charleston advances to regional semifinals to face sixth-seeded Gannon (Date TBA). Gannon moved on to the semifinals with a 2-1 win over third-seeded Millersville on Saturday.
 
In the top half of the Super Region 1 bracket, top-seeded Franklin Pierce will meet fourth-seeded Post in the regional semifinals. FPU defeated eight-seeded Bloomsburg, 3-0, on Saturday, while Post advanced past fifth-seeded West Chester in PKs.
 
Jose Suarez put the Golden Eagles on the board in the 14th minute with an assist from Joao Belmudes. Less than four minutes later, Belmudes recorded his second assist of the game on a goal by Giorgos Diakos – his first of three goals in the game.
 
Diakos scored his second goal in the 26th minute to give the Golden Eagles a 3-0 lead. Later in the game, Diakos would complete his hat-trick on a PK in the 50th minute to give UC a 5-0 advantage.
 
Eight minutes earlier, just before halftime, Eduardo Barros scored an unassisted goal to put Charleston’s fourth point on the scoreboard.
 
Stafford Dowling added a UC goal in the 55th minute, and Barros scored a second goal in the 73rd minute to wrap up the scoring in the game.
 
Statistically, Charleston held a 36-6 shot advantage in the game, including a 16-2 edge in shots on goal. Charleston also had eight corner kicks in the game.
