BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – Frostburg State outside hitter Beverly Braun was named the Mountain East Conference Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week on Monday afternoon, while Charleston setter Maria Hernandez was voted the Defensive Player of the Week.
Braun, a junior from Irvine, Calif., recorded 56 kills, 29 digs, two blocks and four assists in a 3-0 week for the Bobcats. She hit .276 during the three matches. Her weekend was highlighted by 19 kills and 11 digs in Frostburg State’s season opening win over California (Pa.). To cap the weekend, she recorded a season-high 23 kills to go with nine digs and a block against Lake Erie. She hit .333 against the Storm.

Hernandez, a junior from Bayamon, Puerto Rico, had a standout weekend both offensive and defensively for the Golden Eagles this weekend. During UC’s 4-0 showing at the Molloy/Adelphi Tournament, Hernandez totaled 166 assists, 81 digs, nine kills and two blocks. She recorded four double-doubles (assists-digs) during the tournament, including a weekend-best 56 assists and 28 digs in Charleston’s five-set win over host Adelphi. She also tallied 48 assists and 22 digs in a four-set win over New Haven to wrap up the weekend. She led the MEC in both assists and digs during the first weekend of the season.
