CANTON, Ohio -- UNC Pembroke came up with two individual victories to highlight the first day of competition at the 2020 Great Midwest Athletic Conference/Mountain East Conference Swimming & Diving Championships.
Nathalia Silva won the 1,000 free with a time of 10:17.88, just .10 ahead of Leah Tunney from Hillsdale to set a new meet record. Silva led for most of the race and held off Tunney down the stretch to secure the win. Fairmont State's Zsofi Bevardi was third (10:26.10), Courtney Deem finished fifth in the event (10:44.01) and Notre Dame's Hannah Berlin was eighth (10:53.03).
Mariel Mencia Martinez came away with the win in the 50 free with a time of 23.98, just .07 ahead of Marie Taylor.
Fairmont State's Emily Gersper posted a fifth-place finish in the 200 IM with a time of 2:12.33 to highlight other top-eight performances on the women's side.
UNC Pembroke finished third in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:51.42. Fairmont State was fourth (1:52.49) and Notre Dame was sixth (1:57.64).
On the men's side, Fairmont State's Pedro Gaspar (9:46.24) and Ricard Caston (9:58.64) took third and fourth, respectively, in the 1,000 free. Davis & Elkins' Ryan Clement was seventh (10:08.09). D&E's Geoff Dixon took eighth in the 200 IM (2:01.62). West Virginia Wesleyan's Arthur Assfeld was runner-up in the 50 free (21.07), and Notre Dame's Roan Keller was fifth in the event (21.34).
WVWC's relay team took fourth in the 200 medley relay (1:35.69), just ahead of Fairmont State (1:37.00) and Frostburg State (1:37.26).
