In 2018-19, the Mountain East Conference began its "Dear Sport" initiative where student-athletes in the conference were encouraged to write a letter to their sport. The initiative provides the opportunity for student-athletes to express in their own words the impact that sports has played in shaping them throughout their lives.

Below is a letter from Julia DiPaola, a volleyball player from Fairmont State.
Dear Volleyball,
While our relationship is not as long as some people have with you, I can bet it’s just as strong and deep. It all started in 7th grade when my mom forced me to go to tryouts and from that moment on I was in love with you. I never knew you could bring me so much joy and support. You have taught me so many valuable life lessons as well. The first is that being a good volleyball player is essential, but once it’s over the lessons I've learned will make me an even better person in society. Also being on time, being respectful to everyone, good time management, determined, and having a good work ethic are just some of the others lessons you have taught me.
Thank you for giving me friendships that will last a lifetime. Entering both high school and college you automatically created a support system for me and made the transition a lot less lonely and scary. Being a part of a team is unlike anything else. When everyone is there for a common goal amazing things can happen, and I cannot thank you enough for pairing me with some of the best teammates I could have asked for. Being a student-athlete brings many challenges, but you always helped me through it. You have forced me to stay organized and on top of homework while having practices, lifting, and games. I learned to be good at time management and setting my priorities correctly. You are a lot to balance sometimes but stepping onto the court is an instant stress relief for me. All my worries and problems get put to the side, and for the few hours I am playing, everything is perfect.
Our relationship has not always been perfect, though, as I have sacrificed many social events and being a “normal” teen. I missed school dances, birthdays of friends and family, and even holidays. You have also caused me some of my greatest pain after tearing both of my ACL’s, but yet I still couldn’t give you up. I had to fight and find a way to come back. You helped me realize I am tougher and stronger than I ever thought I was. But after all you have put me through I have no regrets at all, I would give up anything for you.
It is crazy to think I only have three short years left of playing this wonderful sport. I will miss all the friendships and being a part of a team. I will miss that feeling that runs through me on game day. Being in the locker room with my teammates, putting on the jersey, and competing. I promise you I will give my all and make the most out of every moment I get.
Thank you volleyball,
Julia DiPaola #5
