West Virginia Wesleyan Repeats as MEC Champion

SALEM, Va. – UVa-Wise forced an if-necessary game but West Virginia Wesleyan came out on top of a 3-0 win in the nightcap to win the 2017 Mountain East Conference Softball Championship. 
 
The Cavaliers topped the Bobcats 3-0 in the first game of the day, handing West Virginia Wesleyan their first loss in the tournament.  After seven scoreless innings, Olivia Cleary hit a two-run double and Samantha Ely scored on a groundout to give the Cavaliers a 3-0 lead. 
 
Taylor Brandts shut the Bobcats down in their final at-bat to secure the win.  Ely had three hits for UVa-Wise in the win with five other Cavaliers tallying base hit knocks in the contest. 
 
The Bobcats had five different players register hits in the loss.  Hannah Vet allowed three earned runs off of eight hits in eight innings of work.
 
West Virginia Wesleyan rallied in the second game; securing their second MEC Championship title in as many seasons. 
 
The Bobcats came out swinging in the start of game two; plating three runs in their first at-bat.  Jessica Rodriguez hit a two-run single to center and Krista Waggoner added an RBI single to give West Virginia Wesleyan a three-run jump. 
 
Sayaka Foley shut the Cavaliers down in the remainder of the contest.  She allowed just four hits in seven innings of work while striking out ten batters.  Waggoner and Morgan Bruce both had two hits in the win.
